My name is Virginia Valenzuela. My friends call me Vinny. I am a poet, essayist, and fashion writer from New York City. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from The New School where I was the assistant to David Lehman, and became the Editor-in-Chief of LIT Magazine. I teach First Year Writing at NJCU, am a part of Teachers & Writers Collaborative, and am a frequent contributor to The Best American Poetry Blog. My own monthly column, “Fashion and Beauty with Poetess Vinny,” debuted in fall 2018.
So, why a snail? Well,
snails are never in a rush to get
anywhere.
They travel steadily, observing the sights,
soaking in moonlight,
soaking in sounds.
They hold true to their path,
even if it bends ’round corners,
overturns, even upside-down;—
perhaps they could walk
on the sky, if they wanted?
